So, how do you get to Büyükada and how do you get around the island? Here is the complete Büyükada transportation guide.

How to Get to Büyükada? Ferry and Boat Lines

You can easily reach Büyükada from both the Anatolian and European sides of Istanbul via City Lines (Şehir Hatları) ferries, and passenger boats like Mavi Marmara, Turyol, and Dentur.

Transportation from the Anatolian Side: The fastest transit point to Büyükada is the Bostancı pier. You can reach the island in about 30-40 minutes with boats departing from Bostancı. There are also regular trips from Kadıköy, Kartal, and Maltepe piers.

Transportation from the European Side:
Ferries and boats departing from Eminönü, Kabataş, and Beşiktaş piers take you to Büyükada accompanied by a magnificent view of the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara. The journey from the European side takes an average of 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the line used.

💡 Tip: Departure times may vary depending on summer and winter schedules, weekend density, or adverse weather conditions. To avoid surprises at the pier, you can track the current ferry and boat schedules of all lines in real-time by downloading our Büyükada Mobile App.

Transportation Within Büyükada: Ways to Enjoy the Island

Individual fossil-fueled vehicles are not allowed on Büyükada. This rule ensures the island maintains its clean air and tranquility. The horse-drawn carriages used in the past have now been replaced by modern and animal-friendly electric vehicles.

1. Electric Vehicles (Adabüs and Adamini)

Electric vehicles operated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İETT) form the backbone of transportation on the island. You only need to have your Istanbulkart with you to use these vehicles.

BA-1 Çarşı - Tepeköy - Kadıyoran Line: Provides access to the inner parts of the island and residential areas.

BA-2 Çarşı - Maden - Nizam (Grand Tour): This is the most tourist-heavy line that goes to the island's most popular beaches, picnic areas, and routes lined with historical mansions.

BA-3 Çarşı - Lunapark Square: Provides direct access to Lunapark Square, the starting point for those who want to climb up to the Aya Yorgi Church.

2. Bicycle Rental

The freest and most enjoyable way to explore Büyükada is definitely by bicycle. You can rent a bike hourly or daily from dozens of different businesses located in the central bazaar and around the pier; and pedal along the shaded roads amidst pine forests.

3. Walking

The historical Bazaar in the center of the island, the area around the Clock Tower, the ice cream shops, and the coastline are wonderful to explore on foot. Walking through flower-scented streets away from traffic noise is an indispensable part of the Büyükada experience.
