The true beauty of Büyükada begins when you leave the crowded main streets behind and set off towards the side streets shaded by pine trees, quiet bays, and historic mansions. The absence of motor vehicles turns this island into a paradise for walking and cycling enthusiasts.

Whether you want a short nature walk or a challenging cycling tour covering the entire island... Here are the best routes to visit in Büyükada and the most popular trails:

Büyükada Travel Routes: Walking and Cycling Trails

There are two main tours and special thematic routes that have existed for years and are shaped according to the geographical structure of the island.

1. A Traditional Classic: The Short Tour (Approx. 7 km)

This is the most popular and preferred route of the island. Starting from the bazaar center and progressing along Nizam Street, this route passes among the magnificent mansions on Çankaya Street.

Route Points: Nizam Neighborhood, Dilburnu Nature Park entrance, Lovers' Lane (Aşıklar Yolu), and Birlik Square (Lunapark).

Who is it for: Ideal for those looking for both a walk and a pleasant bike ride. Since it doesn't have very steep hills, it appeals to all age groups.

2. The Island's Hidden Beauties: The Grand Tour (Approx. 14 km)

If you say, "I want to see the whole island, get away from the tourist crowds, and listen to the sound of the sea," the Grand Tour is for you. This route allows you to make a complete lap around the island.

Route Points: Starts from Maden Neighborhood, passes through the Viranbağ and Eskibağ bays on the back of the island, and connects back to the center from the Aya Nikola region.

Who is it for: A great experience for nature lovers who enjoy long walks and cyclists with good stamina.

3. Towards the Summit: Aya Yorgi Hill and Church

This is the legendary route that first comes to mind when Büyükada is mentioned. Starting from Birlik Square (formerly Lunapark Square), this route stretches through the pine trees to Yüce Tepe, the highest peak of the island.

Distance and Difficulty: It is a very steep and rocky hill of about 1 kilometer. Riding a bike up this hill is forbidden and dangerous; it can only be climbed on foot.

The Reward: At the end of the hill, the historic Aya Yorgi Church and one of the most magnificent panoramic views of Istanbul await you. Watching the sunset from here is a priceless memory.

4. Synthesis of History and Architecture: The Mansions Route

For those who want to see examples of the island's 19th and 20th-century civil architecture, Çankaya Street and Yirmiüç Nisan Street are perfect choices. While walking on this route, you can photograph magnificent structures such as Reşat Nuri Güntekin's House, Con Pasha Mansion, Azaryan (Seferoğlu) Mansion, and Mizzi Mansion, and fully breathe in the nostalgic atmosphere of the island.
